Monthly Project Highlight — Fort Peck Powerplant Modernization

June 18, 2026

Koontz Electric is proud to continue supporting critical U.S. energy infrastructure by upgrading the electrical system at the Fort Peck Powerplant in Montana for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
This project includes modernization of key 15kV power systems throughout the facility, including replacement of existing 15kV switchgear, installation of new outdoor circuit breakers and high-voltage switches, bus upgrades within the switchyard, and installation of two new air-core reactors designed to improve system stability and reliability.
Fort Peck Dam is one of the most historically significant and strategically important hydroelectric facilities in the United States. Operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the facility is part of the Missouri River Mainstem System. It helps provide renewable power generation, flood control, and grid support throughout the region. The Fort Peck hydroelectric system averages more than 1 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity generation annually and supports long-term energy resiliency across the Upper Missouri Basin.
Construction activities are currently scheduled to begin in Spring 2027.
